The PADI Public Safety Diver Specialty course gives you a solid foundation to build upon and teaches you both surface and underwater skills that you may need on the job.

The PADI Public Safety Diver Program familiarizes divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques and hazards of public safety diving. It establishes a solid public safety diving foundation and includes basic rescue skills (both surface and underwater), knot tying, search techniques, victim recovery, tender responsibilities, communications and rescue techniques for a distressed public safety diver.

The program covers several key topics that include:

  • Specialized public safety diving equipment
  • Scene handling
  • Communication procedures
  • Search patterns
  • Witness handling
  • Victim and self-rescue techniques
  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or qualifying equivalent certification
  • PADI Rescue Diver or qualifying equivalent certification*
  • 18 years of age
  • Be in good health
  • Have current First Aid and CPR certifications

*The required Rescue Diver course can be taken before or during your PSD training.

Not included in your course fee is your personal gear, which includes:

Mask, fins, snorkel, hood, boots and gloves. Certified divers are expected to provide their own scuba gear, including BCD, regulators, computer, wetsuit or dry suit, tanks, and weights. These items are available for rent if needed.

Addition items required for the PDS course:

  • Clothing that can be worn to crawl around on the ground for the land drills
  • Gloves for use on land drills
  • Compass
  • A minimum of 2 cutting tools, with at least one pair being shears
  • Spare scuba mask
  • CPR pocket mask
  • Spare parts for your scuba gear
  • Surface Marker Buoy

Knowledge Development - Academics are a combination of home study and classroom sessions at Scubatude. 

Confined Water DivesYou'll be introduced to the special procedures, equipment, scene handling, communications and documentation requirements for a public safety diving operation.

Open Water (ocean) DivesDuring four open water dives you'll practice public safety diver skills, including:

  • Compass navigation
  • Knot tying
  • Arc search techniques
  • Victim recovery
  • Rope-pull communications
  • Rescue techniques
